Why are some identifications struckthrough or grayed out?

Modified on Wed, 17 Jan 2024 at 01:06 PM

When you're looking at an observation, you might see that some identifications either have lines going through the text or are grayed out:

Website

iOS/iPadOS app

Android app

What this means is the identification is not active and is not counting toward the observation's Community Taxon. Each user is allowed to have one active identification per observation. For example, if you add one identification to an observation and then add a new identification to the same observation, your previous ID will be withdrawn and will look like the ones you see above. You can also withdraw an identification without adding a new one if you're using our website or our Android app. It's not possible to withdraw your identification in our iOS/iPadOS app, you'll have to access the website.

iNaturalist doesn't remove withdrawn IDs from view because seeing these IDs helps tell the story of how the community arrived at the current Community Taxon.
