By default, iNaturalist sends you a notification every time another user adds an identification to your observation to or an observation you're following.
If you want to reduce the number of notifications you receive, the best way to do that is to turn off notifications for confirming identifications - that is, identifications added by other users that match an identification you have already added to that observation.
Here's how to turn off notifications for confirming identifications:
- Access Account Settings on the website by going to https://www.inaturalist.org/users/edit. Log in if you need to.
- On the left-hand side of the page, click on "Notifications".
- For "Confirming ID's", turn the switch the "Off". Click on the blue Save Settings button.
- You will no longer be notified when someone adds the same identification as yours to one of your observations or to an observation you're following.
Further details
- If the confirming identification contains a comment, you will be notified, so you won't miss out on comments made by other users.
- If the identification is more precise than yours, you will be notified about the identification. For example, if you added a species-level identification Brown Bear (Ursus arctos) of and someone else adds a subspecies-level identification of Tibetan Brown Bear (Ursus arctos ssp. pruinosus) to the observation, you will see a notification for that identification.
- If you would like to stop being notified by a specific user's activity, you can mute them.
