What I should I do if I find an artificialy generated image or sound on iNaturalist?

Modified on Tue, 7 Oct at 12:13 PM

Photos and sounds attached to observations should document the actual individual organism being recorded in the observation, and be accurate evidence that that the community can evaluate.

If you think the use of the photo or sound on iNaturalist is wholly or mostly artificially generated by AI, you can flag the photo or sound using the iNaturalist website. On the observation page, mouseover the photo or sound and you will see a flag icon at the bottom. Click on that to flag it.

You'll see several options. Choose "Artificially Generated Content", then click Save.

The photo or sound will be replaced by an "Artificially Generated Content" image and any observation(s) linked to the media will become casual grade

If possible, write a civil comment on the flag or on the observation and explain to them that artificially generated content is not acceptable evidence on iNaturalist. You can direct them to this FAQ.

Things to keep in mind

  • Please assume others mean well. Many people who post an image or sound like this may have no malicious intent.

  • If most of the image or sound is real but has been edited in a way to make it no longer accurate, use the Data Quality Assessment instead of flagging the image.

  • Manually created sketches should not be flagged as artificially generated.

  • If the content is stolen from elsewhere on the internet, you may want to flag it as Copyright Infringement instead.

  • If you believe your photo was incorrectly flagged, please write a comment on the flag or submit a ticket to iNaturalist.

  • Accounts that post artificially-generated content may be suspended, usually only after they are warned yet continue with their behavior. However, if the activity is clearly malicious or is doing it on a large scale, suspension may come first.
