What if I think an image or sound as been stolen?

Modified on Fri, 6 Dec at 3:24 PM

Photos or sounds attached to observations should document the actual individual organism being recorded in the observation and the observer should own or have permission to use the image or sound.

If you think the use of the photo or sound on iNaturalist represents copyright infringement, you can flag the photo or sound using the iNaturalist website. On the observation page, mouseover the photo or sound and you will see a flag icon at the bottom. Click on that to flag it.

You'll see several options. Choose "Copyright Infringement", then click Save.

The photo or sound will be replaced by a "Copyrighted Media Removed" image and the observation(s) linked to the media will become casual grade

If possible, write a comment on the flag or on the observation and link to where that piece of media appears elsewhere and politely remind the person to only include photos they own. You can direct them to this FAQ.

Things to keep in mind

  • Please assume others mean well. Most people who post photos they don't own are unaware that it's a problem on iNaturalist, and they have no malicious intent.

  • Some professional photographers also have an iNaturalist account and they post their photos here as well. Before flagging, check to see if the observer's name matches the photographer if you find their photos elsewhere online.

  • If you believe your photo was incorrectly flagged, please write a comment on the flag or submit a ticket to iNaturalist.

  • Accounts that post content they don't own may be suspended, usually only after they are warned yet continue with their behavior. However, if the activity is clearly malicious or at a large scale, suspension may come first.
