Why are you requiring email confirmation now?

Modified on Thu, 14 Sep 2023 at 06:26 AM

A working email address is important to:

  • reset your password
  • know when other people have comments or questions about your observations or identifications
  • communicate important updates or policies

Starting on September 6, 2023, any account lacking a confirmed email address needs to reset the password (by email to the address on file) to login.

We began requiring email confirmation for new accounts in December 2022. In June 2023, we began email outreach to older accounts that had not yet been confirmed. In August 2023, we extended our email outreach in attempts to reach more people before the September 6 deadline.

Over the years, many people have created accounts with typos in their email addresses, fake email addresses, or occasionally even no email address. Our apps don't have push notifications, so we've lost touch with many people. Requiring email confirmation for everyone is a long overdue step.
